How to cut your energy bills
Energy is one of the largest bills most households face, and small changes can add up to a meaningful saving over a year. You don't have to sit in the cold to pay less.
Know which tariff you're on
If you've never switched or fixed, you're probably on your supplier's standard variable tariff, which moves with the price cap. Understanding what you're paying per unit and per day (the standing charge) is the first step to knowing whether you could do better.
Fix vs variable
A fixed tariff locks your unit rates for a set period, giving certainty. A variable one moves with the market. Which is better depends on where prices are heading, so compare the fixed deals available against the current cap before deciding.
Free ways to use less
Cutting usage is a guaranteed saving whatever tariff you're on.
- Turn the thermostat down by one degree
- Switch appliances off standby
- Draught-proof doors and windows
- Run washing at 30 degrees and only with full loads
- Check if you're eligible for any support schemes or grants
Send regular meter readings
If you don't have a smart meter, sending readings stops your supplier estimating and potentially overcharging you. It's a small habit that keeps your bills accurate.
