How to stop overpaying on car insurance

5 min read · Reviewed August 2026

Car insurance is one of the easiest bills to overpay on, because doing nothing costs you money. If you let your policy auto-renew each year, you're often quoted more than a new customer would pay for the exact same cover.

Why loyalty costs you money

Insurers know that people who auto-renew rarely check whether they could pay less. Prices tend to creep up at each renewal. Comparing a handful of providers, even if you end up staying, is the only way to know if you're getting a fair price.

Time it right

Quotes are often cheapest around 20 to 26 days before your renewal date, rather than on the day itself. Set a reminder so you shop early instead of leaving it to the last minute.

Compare the whole picture, not just the price

A lower headline price can hide a higher excess or thinner cover. Look at the excess, the cover level and any add-ons so a cheap policy doesn't end up costing you more if you claim.

  • Check the compulsory and voluntary excess
  • Confirm the cover level (third party vs comprehensive)
  • Watch for add-ons you don't need
  • Make sure your details and mileage are accurate
