Travel insurance: how to avoid overpaying
Travel insurance is cheap peace of mind compared to the cost of a medical bill or cancelled trip abroad. But it's easy to overpay or buy the wrong type, so a little care goes a long way.
Single trip vs annual
If you take one or two trips a year, single-trip cover is usually cheapest. If you travel three or more times, an annual multi-trip policy often works out better value. Work out how much you actually travel before choosing.
Buy it when you book, not when you fly
Buying cover as soon as you book means you're protected if you have to cancel before you travel, not just while you're away. Leaving it to the last minute misses that protection.
Check the important bits
The cheapest policy isn't always the right one. Make sure it actually covers what you need.
- The right regions (Europe vs worldwide)
- Any medical conditions declared honestly
- Cover levels for cancellation, medical and baggage
- Any activities you're planning (skiing, watersports)
- The excess you'd pay on a claim
